Darrell and Glenda Young discovered decorative concrete by chance. A Tampa restaurant owner had asked Darrell and a friend who were working with pool decks, stain the restaurant floors, something they’d never done before.
Instead of turning down the opportunity, Glenda went to the manufacturer’s school to learn acid staining. The rest, as Glenda says, is history.
That was six years ago. Today, the Youngs have build SFG Floors into a formidable business in Florida. With both a residential and a commercial clientele, SFG Floors has begun undertaking large, commercial projects in establishments such as local grocery stores.
SFG Floors, which offers both interior and exterior concrete designs, specializes in acid staining, but they also offer a full range of products, including floor art, stamped concrete and stamped overlay, and epoxies and coatings. StarDek and SherCrete are the products SFG Floors predominately uses. All products are backed by a one-year warranty.
But, the lifespan of SFG Floors’ products really depends on the individual product and whether it is properly maintained. For example, epoxy flooring for the interior requires very little maintenance and can last forever if properly maintained. Acrylic sealers, the most common sealer used by SFG Floors, must be resealed every two years to last.
“We’re very honest with our customers,” Glenda Young says. “We tell them straight up how long it’s supposed to last.”
While SFG Floors have completed many exciting projects in their six year history and is scheduled to work on the Titanic exhibit in Orlando, one in particular stands out as their best to date. They were hired redo the entry to the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville.
“They really wanted to have something creative, and they wanted to do something unique,” Glenda Young says, “so they were really flexible with ideas and allowing us to have a lot of input.”
