Concrete floors do not contain harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and several low-VOC sealers are available. |
Concrete colors can be selected to reduce the “heat-island effect” and earn a LEED® credit for the use of materials with a Solar Reflective Index (SRI) greater than 29. These reflective materials can reduce cooling and lighting costs. |
Decorative concrete floors are perfect for radiant heating in addition to the incorporation of architectural features. |
In general, concrete materials are mined and manufactured locally thereby reducing the environmental impacts of transporting construction materials long distances. |
Local materials (such as concrete) can contribute to earning a LEED® credit by incorporating regional materials. |
Pre-consumer recycled materials (e.g., fly ash and slag cement) may be incorporated into the mixtures to contribute to the Recycled Content LEED® Credit. |
Decorative concrete is made to order for each job effectively minimizing unnecessary waste. |

Many Green Decorative Options Exist
| Sustainable Decorative Concrete Products from DCS, Inc. |
| Integral colors for concrete, concrete masonry, and stucco. We offer over 800 standard colors and can lab-match custom colors using Prism Pigments. These colors are measured and weighed individually, ensuring no waste, and are packaged in 100% dissolvable bags protected by a 100% recyclable paper liner. These pigments are post-consumer recycled materials that can contribute to the Recycled Content LEED® Credit. |
Integral Colors (Post-Consumer Recycled Material) for Concrete
| Prism Pigments' Colors are ideal for integrally coloring concrete on areas such as driveways, patios, walkways, athletic courts, stamped concrete and for concrete masonry and stucco. The colors are blended from pure synthetic iron oxide pigments and contain no filler to hinder the performance of the concrete mix. Color applications provide the user with a lightfast, weather resistant, no-maintenance finished product. |
| SkimStone Decorative Finish. SkimStone hybridized portland cement is a versatile and unique decorative finishing system designed to produce a beautiful textured appearance on interior and exterior concrete floors and countertops. The Skimstone products have a VOC well under the LEED requirements for low-emitting materials. SkimStone is currently being utilized in Greensburg, KS to help achieve Platinum Certification as apart of their rebuilding effort. |

| Decorative Overlays. We offer two-component polymer modified cementitious overlay material called Mirastamp that can be stamped, stained, or dyed, and applied on a variety of substrates. These overlays provide a cost-effective, durable material that effectively diverts materials from landfills. Use of these materials can contribute to the Materials Reuse LEED® Credit. Mirastamp is an excellent product that can be used to avoid costly concrete replacement while providing the look of stone, slate, brick, pavers, tile, seamless designed floors, and wood. |
These systems can be applied on substrates where carpet, tile, and, linoleum cannot. |
Overlays are frequently used indoors when VOC are of concern. |
The overlays are measured and mixed onsite effectively eliminating waste. |

Decorative Overlays are a Great Solution for Interior and Exterior Applications
| Sealers. We offer a wide range of both water-based dissipating and solvent curing compounds to meet the demands of any floor covering or coating. Our sealers range from matte to gloss finishes, meet current VOC requirements, and offer excellent protection for a wide range of concrete applications. |
| We have sealers available that meet the requirements of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Rule 1113 referenced by the LEED® Low-Emitting Materials Credit. |
Waterproofing Sealers are limited to a maximum VOC content of 250 g/L |
Other Sealers are limited to a maximum VOC content of 200 g/L |

| Integrally Colored Pervious Concrete |
| Pervious concrete pavement is a porous pavement that captures, stores, and allows stormwater to infiltrate the underlying subsoil. Pervious concrete replaces traditional pavement, and allows stormwater to infiltrate directly into the ground thereby reducing runoff and permitting a naturally occurring filtration process. This Best Management Process (BMP) collects, cools, and helps to remove a number of contaminants (e.g., dirt, oil, deicing chemicals). |
| There are a number of green benefits associated with pervious concrete (many of which contribute directly to LEED® Credits: |
Helps to control the quantity of runoff and the quality of infiltrated water. Pervious concrete is listed as a BMP by KC Metro MARC/APWA Section 5600. |
Pervious concrete pavement contributes to credits (just like regular concrete) in the following areas: heat-island effect (non-roof), construction waste management, recycled content, and regional materials. |
| Pervious concrete can be integrally colored and stamped (using cast aluminum imprinting tools) making it a unique and long-lasting project feature. |
