Soda Blasting Instead of Sandblasting

If you live in the New York area, you have probably heard the term, "soda blasting," but you might not know what it means. Basically, it is a more environmentally-friendly way of surface blasting. In the past, New York construction professionals would use sandblasting for paint removal, rust removal, and surface prep; but recent findings have deemed sandblasting as dangerous and can be harmful to your health. So now, surface restoration companies are utilzing soda and other blasting media to revitalize buildings, vintage cars, boats, and other surfaces back to their original state.

Soda Blasting Defined

A substance called sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is placed in an air compressor and then blasted onto a surface to remove paint, surface coatings, grease, rust, and graffiti. The process of soda blasting is gentle, yet abrasive.

Benefits of Soda Blasting

Blasting with soda is eco-responsible and will not damage the surface being prepped. Soda can be used on any surface, whereas sand, which can be harmful on wood, cannot. Soda blasting leaves behind a film which prevents rust from forming on metals for many months after the blasting.

Soda Compared to Other Blasting Media

Blasters have used glass, sand, even walnuts to remove paint or other debris from surfaces. Some of these materials can be too harsh, especially on wooden objects. Some organic materials, such as the crushed walnuts, are not as harsh, yet they are not as effective either. Soda is the best of both worlds. Is is less harsh on surfaces, but highly effective. It will not crack or warp the area that is being blasted. So the next time you need a car, wall, or building restored, look into soda instead of sand for blasting and surface prep.
