Choosing a Concrete Mix Design for Your Exterior Concrete Project

Choosing the correct concrete mix design is crucial to the success of your concrete project.  The basic elements to any concrete mix are portland cement, aggregate and water. Blending these elements together allows you to create multiple variations of concrete, and getting the right mix ensures the concrete will work well for your application.

The concrete mix determines the concrete’s placeability, or how it stays together once it’s poured. It’s important to find a good balance between concrete that’s difficult to pour, but extremely durable, and very easy to pour and less durable.

It also determines its strength. Your mix will vary greatly depending on what your project is. For example, you’d need a very strong concrete mix if you’re using it structurally, as in a building project. But for most decorative concrete projects, your mix should be a little more flexible. This can be achieved by finding the correct water to concrete ratio. Also, with a decorative concrete mix, there are typically hardeners added to the surface after the concrete has been set, so your original mix can be less strong.

Weather is another factor. Your concrete mix should allow for freezing or thawing if it will be used in a cold climate, and heat if it’s being used in a hot weather climate.

All of these factors go into deciding the correct concrete mix design. It’s important to know what type of concrete mix works best for different projects, that way you’ll be able to achieve flawless results with any type of concrete application.
