There is no such thing as a perfect flooring choice. Every material has a drawback or two to consider. You may be able to adapt to those drawbacks, or you might decide to change your mind altogether. Some of the drawbacks ascribed to polished concrete flooring might be: the intensive labor that is needed to install it; the potential for damage, such as spalling or denting; and concrete is sometimes thought of as cold and too hard for longer-term standing, for instance in the kitchen.

The good news: There are ways to deal with these drawbacks. Damages and stains can be kept to a minimum with the application of a good sealant product, which should be reapplied either once a year or once every other year, depending on the condition. Damages can be repaired fairly readily and should not be nearly as time consuming as the initial installation unless (they are major).

If you are concerned about the hardness of the floor, you can consider adding a padded rug where you spend the most time on your feet (e.g., in front of the stove or the sink), as this will ease some of the burden. Finally, if you are worried about the coldness of the floor itself, you can add radiant heaters, which are tubes that are set into a fresh concrete floor when it is poured that pass heated water throughout the slab and heat it up as well as your house.
